THE DL: In Tarantino’s first-ever film, a disc jockey named Clarence (Quentin himself) attempts to throw his best bud, Mickey (Craig Hamann), a bitchin’ birthday party, complete with a quality cake and a call girl encounter. What happens after that is unknown–36 minutes worth of reels were lost in a fire and never recovered.
RESIDENT BAMF: Clarence. And not just cause he’s Quentin. Dude also wears a Sinbad hoop earrings!
WHAT A QT! (CLASSIC QUENTIN MOMENT): In the opening scene, Clarence essentially states that The Partridge Family saved his life. Before watching an episode of the classic ’70s sitcom, he was considering killing himself. But after spending some time with David Cassidy, Shirley Jones and Danny Bonaduce, dude realized he needed to keep living. Because if he didn’t, he would never be able to see them and the show again. This nerdy spiel sounds like something True Romance‘s Clarence would have said if he had the time. Or, better yet, something Quentin would say on a daily basis.
PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC: “Ballroom Blitz” plays over another scene in which Clarence goes off on how Elvis kinda sorta gets him off. Gee, I wonder where we’ve heard that before…
NOTABLE QUOTABLE:
Your ass is grass and I’m the lawnmower!
